VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS

 
IN ANIMAL CARE, GROUNDS MAINTENANCE, AND CONSTRUCTION
 

Based on your age and experience, you might work on the grounds or on improvement projects - a great way to help the Zoo, while having fun learning more about animals and your Pocatello Zoo.

   
 
IN EDUCATION (which may also involve the animals)
 

Adult Volunteer Programs

We need you at the Zoo! We are especially in need of teachers (for summer camps) and individuals interested in marketing and public relations. Events and short-time volunteers are also needed. Training for long-term "Trackers" starts mid-March ($60 fee). There are also positions available for summer internships. Call the Zoo for more information at 208-234-6264.

   
 

Youth Volunteer Programs

Youth, ages 14-18 that are interested in volunteering at the Pocatello Zoo this summer are invited to attend ZooYou Information Day, May 21, 2011, 2 p.m.

The volunteer positions that may be available are the following:

 

Barnyard Aide

Qualifications: Ages 14-18, GPA minimum: 2.0

Job Duties: Assisting Zookeepers with the care of barnyard collection and maintenance of barnyard contact area; raking, and weeding; helping patrons in contact yard; other duties assigned by barnyard zookeepers. Youth are required to be available for one 2- hour session, one day a week.

   
 

Education Animal Aide

Qualifications: Ages 14-18, GPA minimum: 2.0; preference will be given to individuals with previous animal care experience.

Job Duties: Assisting Zookeepers with the care of the education animal collection, to include cleaning exhibits, preparing diets and cleaning animal closet and classroom; other duties assigned by barnyard zookeepers. Youth are required to be available for one 1-hour session, one day a week.

   
 

Jr. Camp Assistant

Qualifications: Ages 14-18; previous experience working with younger children; GPA minimum: 2.0.

Job Duties : Assist camp instructor with various tasks during zoo camp programs; distributing snacks; assisting children during craft and art activities; helping to monitor children during field trips and swim sessions; set up and clean up; other duties assigned by Curator of Education or Education Assistant. Youth are required to be available for at least one full camp session, and all the preparatory sessions for that camp.

   
  UPPER LEVEL POSITIONS
 

Junior Interpreter:

Qualifications: Ages 14-18, previous experience volunteering at the Zoo or exemption from Curator of Education; successful completion of training camp test and advanced training; successful completion of short education presentation in front of an audience; GPA minimum: 2.5. Preference will be given to individuals with previous animal handling experience.

Job Duties: Assist Curator of Education, Education Assistant, Education Interns and/or Adult Volunteers with interpretation at ZooCamps, ZooSnooZzzz's, Zoorific Tours, Outreaches and other zoo programs; assist with preparations for programs; any other duties as assigned by Curator of Education. Youth must be willing to volunteer at least 12 hours per week.

   
 

Jr. Zookeeper

Qualifications : Ages 16-18, previous experience volunteering at the Zoo; recommendation from a zookeepers; successful completion of training camp test and advanced training; permission from the Zoo Director; GPA minimum: 2.5.

Job Duties: Assisting Zookeepers with the care of the zoo animal collection, to include cleaning exhibits and preparing; raking, sweeping, weeding and landscaping; scrubbing floors, buckets and other animal items; cleaning/scrubbing staff building and upper barn; painting and helping to build or improve exhibits; other duties assigned by zookeepers. Youth must be willing to be on Zoo grounds a minimum of 3 days a week, at least 4 hours on each of those days; must be able to follow directions exactly as given by Zoo staff.

   
 

Jr. Show Assistant

Qualifications : Ages 16-18, previous experience volunteering at the Zoo; recommendation from Curator of Education or Education Assistant; successful completion of training camp test and advanced training; successful completion of short education presentation in front of an audience; GPA minimum: 2.5. Preference will be given to individuals with previous animal handling and public speaking or theatre experience.

Job Duties: Assist Curator of Education, Education Assistant, Education Interns with animal and Biofacts presentations, puppet shows, Birthday Parties and possibly other zoo education programs and events; any other duties as assigned by Curator of Education. Youth must be willing to be on Zoo grounds a minimum of 3 days a week, at least 4 hours on each of those days; must be able to follow directions exactly as given by Zoo staff.

   
 

Short-term volunteer experience is also available as a Zoo Events Volunteer. (No fees are collected for this position; training camp is not required.)
